Why We Need You
Restoring classic railroad equipment always comes with surprises—because “it’s not what you know until you know it.” A routine wheel swap on two Great Northern passenger coaches suddenly uncovered a much bigger story beneath the cars: the trucks and brake systems needed significant rebuilding. Once the trucks were rolled out, a long list appeared—repairs, replacements, and full overhauls that simply couldn’t wait.
Ignoring this work would only make matters worse and, more importantly, unsafe. These are two of the most popular coaches on the North Shore Scenic Railroad, and safety is non-negotiable. Your support ensures these beloved cars continue to operate reliably for years to come.
Some funding for this project has already been secured, but to finish all the work necessary your help is needed. Museum crews will be doing most of the work now, when finished we will have the coaches back in service, thanks to your support!
They Look Great Inside — Here’s What You Don’t See
Recently, both coaches received interior makeovers: new upholstery, fresh flooring and paint, upgraded toilets, and modernized air conditioning. Step inside and they look fantastic.
But the most critical work lives out of sight, under the floor:
Truck rebuilding (the wheel-carrying frames that support the car)
Brake system overhauls
Wheel work and related safety components
These projects aren’t flashy—but they are essential. When we finish, the coaches won’t look different. What will look different are the smiles of satisfaction on our guests’ faces as they enjoy an authentic, historically correct, and wonderfully smooth ride.
With your help, coaches #1115 and #1116 will continue carrying history—and happy passengers—up the North Shore. Together, we’ll honor their past, secure their future, and keep the magic of classic railroading alive.
