SUMMARY:Volunteer Train Crew Training Class
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Train Crew Training:\nExperience in railroading and railroad knowledge are not required to join the crew. We provide class room and hands-on training to ensure all volunteers have the skills and ability to work on a safe and enjoyable railroad. \nTo find out more call 218-733-7531 or email liam.hoffmann@duluthtrains.com to join the Volunteer Crew. \n2026 weekend classroom schedule:  Feb 28th\,  March 1st\,  7th\,  8th\,  21st\,  22nd    (2026)\, 8 am to 4 pm \n\n\n\n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nPrerequisite Requirements: \nNo prior experience in railroading or transportation is necessary to volunteer as a crew member on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. Certification is a commitment that requires classroom and on-the-job training which the railroad provides. \nVolunteers Crewmember Requirements: \n\nmust be at least 18 years of age\nhave a willingness to work as part of a team\nhave a safety minded attitude\nbe willing to follow company policies\, state statutes\, and federal regulations\nsubmit to and pass a pre-employment drug screening as well as random tests while operating as a crew member for drug and alcohol use\npass medical\, hearing\, and vision testing\nsubmit state and federal driver’s records for review\nsubmit to criminal background check\npass written and practical tests\n\nThe administrative side of these requirements\, as well as testing\, will be addressed and completed during training. \n\n\nRailroad crew training (Brakeman\, Conductor\, Engineer) are offered in February through April each year.  See information below for more training details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPath to Certification \nStudents are required to attend 48 hours of classroom and hands-on training spread over three different weekends in February and March. Students then take written exams before proceeding to “on the job” (OJT) training. OJT training consists of a minimum of 100 hours over the course of our operating season.  The first portion of OJT training is in a controlled environment with instructors.  The remainder of OJT takes place with NSSR crew members on actual scheduled passenger trains.  New volunteers are expected to complete the 100 hours of OJT within a year.  How fast you accumulate hours is based on your availability. \nWhen students feel confident\, and management feels they are ready\, a check ride takes place allowing students to demonstrate knowledge and the ability to work safely as part of the NSSR team.  A successful check ride allows the newly certified member to sign up as a conductor or brakeman on scheduled trains. \nIf a crew member’s eventual goal is to be a locomotive engineer and operate the train\, this course is the first step in that direction. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I sign up? \nClick here for more info or to register for the training classes.  An email will be sent confirming your registration in the class.  During the first session\, learning and testing materials will be provided.  Students are encouraged to bring a large 3-ring binder as the material given out will be punched for binder use. \nI want to volunteer\, but I’m looking for something else: \nIf you don’t think this train crew class sounds right for you\, but you’d still like to volunteer for the North Shore Scenic Railroad or Lake Superior Railroad Museum\, please reach out to us at liam.hoffmann@duluthtrains.com. We are always looking for volunteers in our maintenance shop\, museum\, and archive library. No prior experience is required for these positions.  We are always looking for individuals with skills in woodworking\, welding\, metal fabrication\, data storage\, and archive work\, etc. We encourage you to apply.

The performance begins in the Lake Superior Railroad Museum\, where you’ll be treated to a classic book reading of the new Christmas City Express story\, enjoy carolers\, and a visit from a special guest! Then it’s time to hop on the train for a cheerful 30-minute ride out to Lake Superior’s shore—complete with holiday music\, singalongs\, some narration\, twinkling lights\, and all the warm fuzzy feelings. Onboard\, you’ll be treated to complimentary hot chocolate and cookies to keep the magic going. This event is created with shorter attention spans in mind\, making it a great fit for kids under 10—though every year\, we see grown-ups grinning just as much as the little ones. It’s sweet\, simple\, and pure holiday joy. About 90-minutes in total from arrival to finish. \nThe museum is included with your tickets during/after performance\, not beforehand\, its only about 20 minutes of time to explore after the performance. If you come earlier in the day or the next day (prior to 3pm) you can tour the museum for 50% off. \nShow times:\nFridays 4:15\, 5:15\, 6:15\, and 7:15 pm\nSaturdays 3:15\, 4:15\, 5:15\, 6:15\, and 7:15 pm ($5 additional per ticket)\nSundays: 3:15\, 4:15\, 5:15\, and 6:15 \nFull experience is about 90 minutes: Performance first\, then a short 30-minute train ride. The museum is not available for general touring during this time. \nCOACH SEATS: Starting at $40.00 adults\, $35 for kids. for passengers 3 and up\, 2 & under free.\nDOMECAR SEATS: Starting at $50.00 for all passengers (ages 0+)\n(+$5 on Saturdays\, premium day fee) \n \n  \nSpace is very limited. Reservations are strongly encouraged for this show. For just $10 more per ticket\, you can ride upstairs in the SkyView Domecar and enjoy comfy booth seating under the 85-foot glass dome. \nThere will be a $5.00 fee on peak days (Saturdays) for all tickets. \nWheelchair Information: The performance of the story is accessible\, however the train ride is not due to the historic nature of the equipment. Boarding the train requires about 4 steps up to the level of the train. Limited mobility patrons should consider extra time for walking to the train from parking. \n\nBring a letter for Santa! The big-man himself is part of the show. We encourage all riders to bring a letter for Santa. Optionally\, if you include your return address you will get a fun reply that will come in the mail after the event. \nWant to visit the Lake Superior Railroad Museum too? The museum closes at 4pm on Fridays & 3pm on Saturdays when the Christmas City Express shows are on. You can come earlier in the day to explore the museum and enjoy 1/2 off admission as a combo with your train ticket. \n\nThe Bentleyville Shuttle Train is not operating this year. The Christmas City Express does pass by Bentleyville\, but does not stop there. Its not too far of a walk from the Depot before or after your show.  \n \n  \nMusic is a big part of the show. Each night\, we feature local performers who come to share some holiday joy to passengers before and after the performance of the Christmas city Express. Some returning passengers might want to book on a night they know they band\, or remember them from previous years… \nMusic schedule 2025: \n\n\n\n11/28/2025\nGreg Tiburzi\n\n\n11/29/2025\nZOZATRAS\n\n\n12/5/2025\nSterling Strings\n\n\n12/6/2025\nString Quartet\n\n\n12/7/2025\nCSS Jazz Band\n\n\n12/12/2025\nChoralaires\n\n\n12/13/2025\nSolid Gold and Maroon Melodics\n\n\n12/14/2025\nAll About Music\n\n\n12/19/2025\nLOON COR\n\n\n12/20/2025\nAccordions Four\n\n\n12/21/2025\nDHS Orchestra\n\n\n\n  \nThe above music performer schedule is subject to change without notification. \nMore about the train can be found in this video: \n \nAll Aboard! SUMMARY:Domecar Book Launch\, Jazz\, and train tour - FREE
DESCRIPTION:🚂 All Aboard for a Dome-Sized Celebration! 🎉 \nTo help celebrate the brand-new book “There’s No Place Like Dome”\, the North Shore Scenic Railroad is rolling out the red carpet (or maybe the red caboose 🚦) with a launch party you won’t want to miss! Mark your calendars for Thursday\, September 4\, 2025\, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the North Shore Scenic Railroad Depot (506 W. Michigan Street\, Duluth). \n📖 Meet author and railroad historian Robert Tabern\, pick up your very own autographed copy of the book\, and then step right up into railroad royalty—the three dome cars: Sky View\, Silver Club\, and Puget Sound. Normally these beauties are for passengers on excursions\, but for one evening\, they’ll be open for everyone to explore. Talk about a once-in-a-DOME-time opportunity! \n🎶 Keeping the night on track\, the Depot Jazz Band (yes\, the same toe-tappers you’ve heard at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum) will be performing live\, for FREE\, right in the courtyard boarding area. Don’t worry—if the weather derails our outdoor fun\, the music will move indoors faster than you can say “All Aboard!” \n🌭🍺 And what’s a party without some treats? Hot dogs and root beer floats will be available for purchase. Because when you’re having a good time\, you’ve gotta ketchup. \n\nThe North Shore Scenic Railroad is proud to have more dome cars than any other railroad in the Midwest—three in total\, which officially makes us the kingDOM of domes. Tabern’s new 109-page book dives into how dome cars were dreamed up\, their fascinating history\, and how these three stars found their forever home in Duluth. \nRobert Tabern isn’t just any writer—he’s practically a rail-world traveler\, having ridden almost every mile of Amtrak (plus routes in Canada\, England\, Scotland\, France\, and Japan). He’s authored over 20 books\, including in-depth histories of famous trains like the Mark Twain Zephyr and Nebraska Zephyr. With his Midwest Rail Rangers nonprofit\, he’s dedicated to teaching passengers the stories rolling past their windows. \n\nSo\, come join us for a night that’s sure to be off the rails (in the best way possible):📚 Dome cars\, 🎷 Jazz\, 🌭 Hot dogs\, 🍺 Root beer floats\, 🚂 trains\, and wonderful people! \n📅 Thursday\, September 4\, 2025📍 North Shore Scenic Railroad Depot\, Duluth💵 FREE to attend! \nBecause really—there’s no place like Dome. 😉
