SUMMARY:Christmas City Express
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE THE CHRISTMAS CITY EXPRESS STORY READING:\n \nThe Christmas City Express is a storybook experience recommended for families with children and the young at heart. The performance begins in the Lake Superior Railroad Museum\, where you’ll be treated to a classic book reading of the new Christmas City Express story\, enjoy carolers\, and a visit from a special guest! Then it’s time to hop on the train for a cheerful 30-minute ride out to Lake Superior’s shore—complete with holiday music\, singalongs\, some narration\, twinkling lights\, and all the warm fuzzy feelings. Onboard\, you’ll be treated to complimentary hot chocolate and cookies to keep the magic going. This event is created with shorter attention spans in mind\, making it a great fit for kids under 10—though every year\, we see grown-ups grinning just as much as the little ones. It’s sweet\, simple\, and pure holiday joy. About 90-minutes in total from arrival to finish. \nThe museum is included with your tickets during/after performance\, not beforehand\, its only about 20 minutes of time to explore after the performance. If you come earlier in the day or the next day (prior to 3pm) you can tour the museum for 50% off. \nShow times:\nFridays 4:15\, 5:15\, 6:15\, and 7:15 pm\nSaturdays 3:15\, 4:15\, 5:15\, 6:15\, and 7:15 pm ($5 additional per ticket)\nSundays: 3:15\, 4:15\, 5:15\, and 6:15 \nFull experience is about 90 minutes: Performance first\, then a short 30-minute train ride. The museum is not available for general touring during this time. \nCOACH SEATS: Starting at $40.00 adults\, $35 for kids. for passengers 3 and up\, 2 & under free.\nDOMECAR SEATS: Starting at $50.00 for all passengers (ages 0+)\n(+$5 on Saturdays\, premium day fee) \n \n  \nSpace is very limited. Reservations are strongly encouraged for this show. If space is still available\, tickets may be purchased starting at 3 pm the day of the performance at the North Shore Scenic Railroad ticket office. \nDomecar seats are available. For just $10 more per ticket\, you can ride upstairs in the SkyView Domecar and enjoy comfy booth seating under the 85-foot glass dome. \nThere will be a $5.00 fee on peak days (Saturdays) for all tickets. \nWheelchair Information: The performance of the story is accessible\, however the train ride is not due to the historic nature of the equipment. Boarding the train requires about 4 steps up to the level of the train. Limited mobility patrons should consider extra time for walking to the train from parking. \n\nBring a letter for Santa! The big-man himself is part of the show. We encourage all riders to bring a letter for Santa. Optionally\, if you include your return address you will get a fun reply that will come in the mail after the event. \nWant to visit the Lake Superior Railroad Museum too? The museum closes at 4pm on Fridays & 3pm on Saturdays when the Christmas City Express shows are on. You can come earlier in the day to explore the museum and enjoy 1/2 off admission as a combo with your train ticket. \n\nThe Bentleyville Shuttle Train is not operating this year. The Christmas City Express does pass by Bentleyville\, but does not stop there. Its not too far of a walk from the Depot before or after your show.  \n \n  \nMusic is a big part of the show. Each night\, we feature local performers who come to share some holiday joy to passengers before and after the performance of the Christmas city Express. Some returning passengers might want to book on a night they know they band\, or remember them from previous years… \nMusic schedule 2025: \n\n\n\n11/28/2025\nGreg Tiburzi\n\n\n11/29/2025\nZOZATRAS\n\n\n12/5/2025\nSterling Strings\n\n\n12/6/2025\nString Quartet\n\n\n12/7/2025\nCSS Jazz Band\n\n\n12/12/2025\nChoralaires\n\n\n12/13/2025\nSolid Gold and Maroon Melodics\n\n\n12/14/2025\nAll About Music\n\n\n12/19/2025\nLOON COR\n\n\n12/20/2025\nAccordions Four\n\n\n12/21/2025\nDHS Orchestra\n\n\n\n  \nThe above music performer schedule is subject to change without notification. \nMore about the train can be found in this video: \n \nAll Aboard! SUMMARY:Volunteer Train Crew Training Class
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Train Crew Training:\nExperience in railroading and railroad knowledge are not required to join the crew. We provide class room and hands-on training to ensure all volunteers have the skills and ability to work on a safe and enjoyable railroad. \nTo find out more call 218-733-7531 or email liam.hoffmann@duluthtrains.com to join the Volunteer Crew. \n2026 weekend classroom schedule:  Feb 28th\,  March 1st\,  7th\,  8th\,  21st\,  22nd    (2026)\, 8 am to 4 pm \n\n\n\n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nPrerequisite Requirements: \nNo prior experience in railroading or transportation is necessary to volunteer as a crew member on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. Certification is a commitment that requires classroom and on-the-job training which the railroad provides. \nVolunteers Crewmember Requirements: \n\nmust be at least 18 years of age\nhave a willingness to work as part of a team\nhave a safety minded attitude\nbe willing to follow company policies\, state statutes\, and federal regulations\nsubmit to and pass a pre-employment drug screening as well as random tests while operating as a crew member for drug and alcohol use\npass medical\, hearing\, and vision testing\nsubmit state and federal driver’s records for review\nsubmit to criminal background check\npass written and practical tests\n\nThe administrative side of these requirements\, as well as testing\, will be addressed and completed during training. \n\n\nRailroad crew training (Brakeman\, Conductor\, Engineer) are offered in February through April each year.  See information below for more training details. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPath to Certification \nStudents are required to attend 48 hours of classroom and hands-on training spread over three different weekends in February and March. Students then take written exams before proceeding to “on the job” (OJT) training. OJT training consists of a minimum of 100 hours over the course of our operating season.  The first portion of OJT training is in a controlled environment with instructors.  The remainder of OJT takes place with NSSR crew members on actual scheduled passenger trains.  New volunteers are expected to complete the 100 hours of OJT within a year.  How fast you accumulate hours is based on your availability. \nWhen students feel confident\, and management feels they are ready\, a check ride takes place allowing students to demonstrate knowledge and the ability to work safely as part of the NSSR team.  A successful check ride allows the newly certified member to sign up as a conductor or brakeman on scheduled trains. \nIf a crew member’s eventual goal is to be a locomotive engineer and operate the train\, this course is the first step in that direction. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I sign up? \nClick here for more info or to register for the training classes.  An email will be sent confirming your registration in the class.  During the first session\, learning and testing materials will be provided.  Students are encouraged to bring a large 3-ring binder as the material given out will be punched for binder use. \nI want to volunteer\, but I’m looking for something else: \nIf you don’t think this train crew class sounds right for you\, but you’d still like to volunteer for the North Shore Scenic Railroad or Lake Superior Railroad Museum\, please reach out to us at liam.hoffmann@duluthtrains.com. We are always looking for volunteers in our maintenance shop\, museum\, and archive library. No prior experience is required for these positions.  We are always looking for individuals with skills in woodworking\, welding\, metal fabrication\, data storage\, and archive work\, etc. We encourage you to apply.

SUMMARY:Murder Mystery Express
DESCRIPTION:Traveling by train can be fun\, romantic\, and sometimes dangerous. Take the case of the North Shore Scenic Railroadʹs Elegant Dinner Train. A group of people\, most of whom are strangers to one another\, sit down to a gourmet meal in the beautiful Lake of the Isles dining car. As the train pulls out of the Depot in Duluth and heads onto the Lakefront Line\, the guests in the dining car meet one another and find that there is something just a little off balance. An air of mystery surrounds the alter‐egos of some of the passengers… \n \nAlmost as if planned to the exact minute\, the train crosses Railroad Street and the diesel engine’s horn blares out its warning…a shot rings out! One of the passengers has met a cruel and quite fatal end. For the remainder of the evening\, your job is to solve the crime and deliver the guilty party to authorities by the time the train returns to the station. Of course\, because this is a sophisticated and elegant evening\, dinner and cocktails will continue as if there is nothing wrong.  Fortunately\, there is a world famous detective on board to assist in finding the guilty party. \nIt’s an evening of mirth\, merriment\, and mayhem on The Disoriented Express! \nThree weeks only August\, Wednesday through Saturdays:August 13-16\, 20-23\, 27-30 | 5:30pm to 8:00pm \nDuration: 2.5 Hours\nDistance: 34 Miles \n \nAdults (16+): $130.00\, Reservations Required\n \nMENU SELECTIONS 2026: \n\nMidCoast Braised Beef Short Rib\nPork Loin\n\nKofta w. SUMMARY:The Great Pumpkin Train
DESCRIPTION:All aboard for a fall adventure like no other—the Great Pumpkin Train! Once a year\, a magical pumpkin field appears along the tracks\, and the only way to reach it is by train. Everyone gets a pumpkin! Admission to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum is included\, so when you’re done pumpkin-picking\, you can explore trains\, history\, and plenty of indoor fun at the Depot like Baloon Twisting\, ventriloquist\, magic\, and more. It’s a Duluth tradition that’s equal parts festive\, cozy\, and a little bit quirky—just like autumn itself. \nWhen your train pulls into the pumpkin patch\, every ticketed passenger gets to claim their very own pumpkin to haul home. The ride lasts about 90 minutes round trip\, giving you just enough time to soak in the fall colors\, snap too many photos\, and debate which pumpkin has the best “front porch face.” Back at the Depot\, you’re welcome to stick around until 5pm to explore all the museum exhibits. Pro tip: bring a grocery bag (or three) to carry your pumpkins—because trying to juggle a pumpkin like a football through the Depot isn’t nearly as graceful as it sounds. 🎃 \nTicket Prices: \n\n$38 for all passengers\, ages 3 and up. (only ticketed passengers get a pumpkin)\n$58 for Domecar seats for all ages (infants too). More details below.\n$5 additional per ticket added on Saturday (peak day)\nThe Lake Superior Railroad Museum\, included with your ticket for this event\, is only open until 5pm. If you are on a later train\, be sure to come early to enjoy the museum activities.\n\nOctober 15-18th. Three trains to choose from each day: 10:30am\, 1pm\, 3:30pm. Tickets on sale now.  \n \nDomecar Seats are available for a few dollars more\, where you sit in our unique upper level viewing cars\, with lounges below to store pumpkins. Concession are available for sale with these tickets. Due to limited space\, all passengers (infants too) have to pay for a DomeCar seat. \nFine Print Details: Ages 2 and under are free\, but only ticketed passengers can get a pumpkin (parents share with the little ones in the case of 2 and under).  The Pumpkin Patch Ride is not wheelchair accessible for deboarding at the patch. However\, wheelchairs can be loaded at the station into non-heated coaches for the ride. There are no accessible restrooms onboard the train. There are no group-rate discounts available for this excursion. \n \nOther Good Stuff to Know: \n\nTrains operate rain or shine and in snow.\nRestrooms are available on the train\, and coaches are heated/cooled as needed (except in open air car areas).\nTrains operate rain or shine and in snow. Restrooms are available on the train\, and coaches are heated/cooled as needed (except in open air car areas).\nPassengers in coach are boarded in the order they have arrived for checkin. First people to checkin are able to board first. This also allows for extra time to tour the museum beforehand. Any First-Class seats are boarded by reserved seat assignment with no need to checkin extra early.\nThere is ramp parking on both sides of the Depot building\, which is sometimes free on weekends (Sat/Sun).
