Position Title: Assistant Operations Manager
Reports Directly to: Operations Manager
Position Type: Full-Time, Hourly
Directly oversees: Train Service Volunteers
General Description: The Assistant Operations Manager assists in the management of all Train Operations on the Duluth and North Shore Railway and within the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, in a manner consistent with that of both organizations mission statements and safety standards.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities:
- Manage the necessary documentation for the efficient and lawful execution of all covered-service train crew rules and efficiency testing.
- Assist in necessary FRA communication, documentation, and mandated reporting.
- Communicate with related authorities and customers to ensure an efficient, positive experience onboard the train.
- Assist in the organization of train resources for special events, charters, etc.
- Assist in overseeing and facilitating scheduling of events, trains, and crews.
- Assist in developing railroad safety procedures for train service crew members.
- Assist in educational safety training for train service crew and staff members.
- Fill vacancies on scheduled passenger and freight trains.
- Perform Railroad Dispatcher and Employee-In-Charge Duties.
- Conduct efficiency testing of train-service crewmembers.
Requirements:
- Must obtain and maintain a D&NS Rwy Locomotive Engineer’s license per 49 CFR Part 240
- Must obtain and maintain a D&NS Rwy Railroad Conductor’s license per 49 CFR Part 242
- Must obtain and maintain a D&NS Rwy Railroad Dispatching certification.
- Must obtain and maintain a D&NS Rwy On-Track Safety certification.
- Must obtain and maintain knowledge of 49 CFR regulations regarding railroad operations.
- Must be available to work irregular hours and maintain an ‘On Call’ status at times.
- Must possess the ability to work with computer programs; ex Word, Power Point, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and to meet deadlines and follow schedules.
- Must be willing to comply with company policies regarding the use of personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety boots, and hearing protection.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with capability to facilitate varied groups of individuals, including the ability to direct and coach others, work in a team environment, and adapt quickly to changing conditions on the job.
- Must be comfortable working with the public and possess a positive, energetic, and professional persona.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring company sponsorship.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Physical requirements:
- Must be able to read and speak English fluently.
- Must have good vision and hearing, including the ability to see and read hand signals from near and far; distinguish between colors; visually judge the speed and distance of moving objects; see at night and recognize changes in sounds.
- Must be able to push, pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Must have good balance and coordination to step on and off equipment and work from ladders to perform various tasks.
- Must be able to walk, sit, stand and stoop comfortably.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions – including snow, ice, rain, cold and heat.
- Must be able to work frequently at elevations more than 12 ft above the ground
- Must be able to walk on various surfaces (rock, mud, sand, gravel, asphalt, concrete, wood, metal, ice and wet surfaces) for prolonged periods.
This is a full-time position paid hourly at a rate between $24-$26 per hour and based on experience. Successful applicants will receive all company benefits that include: Health insurance, paid vacation/PTO/Sick and safe time, and a company contribution of 5% into a 401(k) plan (once fully vested). Company provides all necessary safety/PPE items, including boots.
This is a Safety Sensitive position governed by Federal Law. Employees who hold this position are subject to random drug and alcohol screening while on duty. In addition to the above responsibilities all employees of the Duluth and North Shore Railway are responsible to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Each employee is equally important to the effective operation of our parent company, the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. Each employee is responsible to conduct themselves and their work in a way that supports the mission of the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. Due to the unique nature of museum work, it may at times be necessary to assume additional responsibilities at times when directed by management and/or the Board of Directors. Although this may not be detailed in your job description, it should be considered part of the job.
