SERVICE ANIMALS ARE ANIMALS THAT ARE INDIVIDUALLY TRAINED TO PERFORM TASKS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES – SUCH AS GUIDING PEOPLE WHO ARE BLIND, ALERTING PEOPLE WHO ARE DEAF, PULLING WHEELCHAIRS, ALERTING AND PROTECTING A PERSON WHO IS HAVING A SEIZURE, OR PERFORMING OTHER SPECIAL TASKS. UNDER THE ADA, A SERVICE ANIMAL IS DEFINED AS A DOG THAT HAS BEEN INDIVIDUALLY TRAINED TO DO WORK OR PERFORM TASKS FOR AN INDIVIDUAL WITH A DISABILITY. IN THAT CASE, THE INDIVIDUAL MUST MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE ANIMAL THROUGH VOICE, SIGNAL, OR OTHER EFFECTIVE CONTROLS.

A SERVICE DOG CAN BE REMOVED IF (1) IT IS OUT OF CONTROL AND THE HANDLER DOES NOT TAKE EFFECTIVE ACTION TO CONTROL IT OR (2) THE DOG IS NOT HOUSEBROKEN.
