🚂 All Aboard for a Dome-Sized Celebration! 🎉

To help celebrate the brand-new book “There’s No Place Like Dome”, the North Shore Scenic Railroad is rolling out the red carpet (or maybe the red caboose 🚦) with a launch party you won’t want to miss! Mark your calendars for Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the North Shore Scenic Railroad Depot (506 W. Michigan Street, Duluth).

📖 Meet author and railroad historian Robert Tabern, pick up your very own autographed copy of the book, and then step right up into railroad royalty—the three dome cars: Sky View, Silver Club, and Puget Sound. Normally these beauties are for passengers on excursions, but for one evening, they’ll be open for everyone to explore. Talk about a once-in-a-DOME-time opportunity!

🎶 Keeping the night on track, the Depot Jazz Band (yes, the same toe-tappers you’ve heard at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum) will be performing live, for FREE, right in the courtyard boarding area. Don’t worry—if the weather derails our outdoor fun, the music will move indoors faster than you can say “All Aboard!”

🌭🍺 And what’s a party without some treats? Hot dogs and root beer floats will be available for purchase. Because when you’re having a good time, you’ve gotta ketchup.

The North Shore Scenic Railroad is proud to have more dome cars than any other railroad in the Midwest—three in total, which officially makes us the kingDOM of domes. Tabern’s new 109-page book dives into how dome cars were dreamed up, their fascinating history, and how these three stars found their forever home in Duluth.

Robert Tabern isn’t just any writer—he’s practically a rail-world traveler, having ridden almost every mile of Amtrak (plus routes in Canada, England, Scotland, France, and Japan). He’s authored over 20 books, including in-depth histories of famous trains like the Mark Twain Zephyr and Nebraska Zephyr. With his Midwest Rail Rangers nonprofit, he’s dedicated to teaching passengers the stories rolling past their windows.
