Julebyen Express Train

December 7 - December 8

Climb aboard the North Shore Scenic Railroad’s Julebyen Express departing from the Duluth Depot and travel north to Knife River, MN, for a traditional Scandinavian Julebyen Christmas Festival. Enjoy Scandinavian foods, music and dancing, and fun shopping for artisan gifts at 20 colorful outdoor huts.

 

Upon arrival in Knife River, passengers deboard to wander all the displays, shops, and food all setup for the festival. Meanwhile, the train reloads and departs for several optional additional rides on the “Troll Train” which is just $15 more, with tickets sold at the Knife River Depot. This is the same train, but a short ride during the layover for a fun additional ride to search for mischievous trolls from the warm train (more below).

Train Schedule:

  • 9:00am: Depart Duluth Depot on the Express Train
  • 10:30am: Arrive Knife River
  • Optional Troll Train To Troll Canyon ride: 11am or 12pm (two trips)- Not included, but just $15 more
  • 1:30pm: Depart Knife River for Duluth
  • Return to Duluth approximately 3:00pm

Saturday, December 7th:
Coach seats (lower level):   $25 Adults & $15 for Kids (3-13, 2 and under free)
Dome seats (upper level): $30 Adults & $20 for Kids 3-13, $15 per Infant (0-2)

 

Sunday, December 8th:  $5 per ticket less on Sunday!
Coach seats (lower level):   $20 Adults & $15 for Kids (3-13, 2 and under free)
Dome seats (upper level): $25 Adults & $20 for Kids, $15 per Infant (0-2)

 

Due to the historic nature of this excursion equipment, there is no wheelchair accessibility onto the train or at the arrival in Knife River. Strollers are not recommended due to the uneven surfaces in the festival, and are not permitted on the train. Baby seats/carriers are allowed and can be stored on the train during the layover if you choose. 

Ride on the Troll Train To Troll Canyon, after you get to Knife River. You’ll enjoy Troll storytelling and troll watching as you travel from Julebyen to Troll Canyon where trolls have been seen!

When the train arrives the festival, passengers deboard to wander all the displays, shops, and food all setup for the festival. Two optional departures of the “Troll Train To Troll Canyon” ride depart at 11am & 12pm, for a 45 minute ride.

Then, there is some time to come back and wander for a while before your warm ride southward and home to Duluth.
